Computer hacking is becoming more prevalent and damaging. It’s hard to believe that very large organisations are being compromised more and more even though they put up firewalls and barriers.

Despite the increased occurrences of computer hacking and heightened risk many organisations are continuing to operate with precious little regard for the potential consequences.

There are well-organised cyber criminals plotting and planning their attacks all over the world. But it’s not limited to seasoned hackers. A teenager in Finland has just been found guilty of nearly 60,000 computer hacking offences including compromising logins, card details and intercepting emails. He was 15 when the first of his offences were committed. BBC’s technology desk editor, Leo Kelion, describes the full story here. It cost just one of the organisations affected over £130,000 as a direct result of the teenager’s cyber-attacks and the culprit escaped going to jail and worse still, walked free!

According to the Daily Mail this is the same lad who wrecked so may Christmas Gamers’ fun by closing down PlayStation and Xbox gaming platforms at just about the most disruptive time possible affecting around 160 million users worldwide.

The internet has no boundaries. It’s open for business all over the world every hour of every day. We recently monitored attempted logins to one of our assets and there were unauthorised attempts from 14 different countries within one 24-hour period. Fortunately we have sufficiently robust defences in place to prevent forced access and block further attempts. The continued attempts are nonetheless concerning.

For most organisations the prospect of being hacked doesn’t even bear thinking about. Such is our reliance on our computing now that without them we’re virtually incapable of doing business as we know it today. Everything revolves around our computers and yet risk management and suitable contingency and recovery plans are often only considered after a catastrophic event has happened.

At Solutions4IT we pride ourselves on helping organisations to be run efficiently, effectively, safely and with sufficient security and redundancy in place. We think that back up and recovery shouldn’t be after-thoughts. We put them right at the forefront when specifying systems and providing IT support for all of our clients.

None of us are completely immune from computer hacking attacks. However with the right preparation and robust protocols and systems in place the risk can be managed effectively.
